2013 ny'rs resolution!

5 ways to keep your New Year's resolutions in 2013

Highlights>>>
  • Make your resolution something you want, not what other people want.
  • Create a realistic action plan to fulfill your New Year's resolution.
  • Have someone hold you accountable for sticking to your New Year's goals.

If your New Year's resolutions from last year have gone unresolved, you're not alone. Now a new year offers another opportunity to achieve your goals, and these 5 tips should help you keep to your New Year's resolutions.

1. Make it something you really want. Don't make it a resolution that you "should" want or what other people tell you to want. It has to fit with your own values.
"Put some thought into it. And avoid knee-jerk New Year's resolutions. We encourage people not to make cheap resolutions, but to save it for something meaningful.

2. Limit your list to a number you can handle. "It's probably best to make two or three resolutions that you intend to keep. That way, you're focusing your efforts on the goals you truly want.

3. Be specific. "To be effective, resolutions and goals need to be pretty specific, "exercise more," in favor of "I'm working out at the gym Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 5:30 p.m.

4. Automate. Automating financial goals can maximize your odds for success without you having to do anything.
If your goal is to save 100k this year, calculate the amount out of each check, then arrange to have it automatically deposited into your savings account each time you get paid.

5. Make a plan. Rather than stating one daunting goal, create a series of smaller steps to reach it.
"Have an action plan, Figure out exactly what you want to do...

New Rules for a Healthy Vagina & avoiding 'Ovarian Cancer'

Think it's safe to ditch your birth control after a certain age or pat on a little talc powder to feel fresh down there? These and other not-so-harmless habits can have a serious impact on the health of your lady parts.

Your vagina didn’t exactly come with an owner’s manual, but after a couple of decades of getting your period, seeing a gynecologist, having sex, and birthing kids, you pretty much know how to take care of it. You know the rules: no douching, don't leave tampons in too long, and get regular Pap tests. But as you get older — and especially as you approach perimenopause and menopause — you may have new vaginal symptoms or issues you’re not so prepared to deal with. And seemingly harmless habits can have a big impact on everything from your sex life to your cancer risk. Here, top ob-gyns share the most common vaginal mistakes they see among patients in their forties and older — and let you know how to take better care of your lady parts.

Wearing a Panty Liner Too Often

If your periods are irregular or you’re dealing with incontinence, you may wear a panty liner frequently to avoid embarrassing situations. But this can set you up for infections and irritation. “The plastic backing on the panty liner prevents air from flowing through and retains heat and sweat, and wearing the same one for too long can lead to bacterial or fungal infections.
Plus, the constant rubbing may cause vulvar irritation. Having a change of underwear, keeping tampons or pads on hand for unexpected periods, and managing incontinence with Kegels, lifestyle changes, or medication may reduce your reliance on panty liners. When you do use them, change your panty liner at least every four hours.

Playing Down Heavy Periods

Girlfriends may have warned that your periods could become heavier as you get older — but that’s not always true. “As menopause approaches, your periods may come closer together or farther apart, but they shouldn’t necessarily be heavier, If your periods do become heavier, or if they’re coming way more often (like every two weeks), or you’re bleeding in between periods or after sex, let your doctor know. Heavy bleeding can be a sign of fibroids (benign uterine tumors), anemia, a hormonal issue like polycystic ovarian syndrome, or more rarely, cervical, uterine, or ovarian cancer.

Treating the Wrong Infection

“As soon as they experience any itching and discharge, most women assume it’s a yeast infection and apply an over-the-counter anti-fungal cream, but that’s not always the cause. Although yeast infections are common — nearly 75 percent of women have at least one in their lifetime — they are only one of three common vaginal infections. Bacterial vaginosis (BV), caused by an overgrowth of the bacteria in the vagina, and trichomoniasis (trich), a sexually transmitted infection, are the other two. Both vaginosis and trich can cause symptoms similar to those of yeast infections, which is why it’s so important to make sure it’s really a yeast infection. If left untreated, BV can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, and both BV and trich can make you more susceptible to sexually transmitted diseases. “If you’ve had lots of yeast infections and this seems to be exactly the same, you can probably get away with treating yourself. However, if symptoms are slightly different or you’re just not sure, check with your doctor. Yeast infections, vaginosis, and trich are all easily treated. An over-the-counter or prescription anti-fungal cream or prescription pill will treat yeast; prescription antibiotics are needed for BV or trich.

Applying Talcum Powder

Patting on talcum powder (or any powders, including some baby powders, that list talc among their ingredients) to feel fresher isn’t just a harmless hygiene measure. The habit can raise your risk of invasive ovarian cancer by about 30 percent, according to new research presented at the 2011 annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research. Frequent, long-term use doubled or even tripled the risk. The study authors speculate that the powder could spread to the genital tract and create an inflammatory reaction. Don’t use it. “There are other ways to keep dry,” she says.
If you’re prone to sweating down there, we recommend wearing cotton underwear and changing them often, avoiding tight-fitting pants, and going commando at night (to give the area a chance to breathe).

Not Using Birth Control

If you’ve skipped a period or two and have what seem to be hot flashes, you may think you can no longer get pregnant because you’re starting to enter menopause. But you’re wrong. “As long as you’re having periods of any kind, no matter how irregular they are, there is always a chance of becoming pregnant. In fact, an analysis by the Pew Research Center found that in 2008, 14 percent of births were to women age 35 and older (compared to 10 percent of births to teen moms). More than half of all pregnancies in women over age 40 are unintended, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a sexual and reproductive health research organization. So don’t toss out birth control unless you’re okay with getting pregnant. “You’re not safe until it’s been at least a year since your last menstrual period

Putting Sex on the Back Burner

According to data published last year, 30 percent of women in their forties and 50 percent of women in their fifties say they hadn't had vaginal sexual intercourse in the previous year. And — surprisingly — such a dry spell could affect their health down there. “When estrogen levels drop after menopause, the tissues of the vagina tend to flatten and become thinner, which can cause painful sex, as well as itching, dryness, burning, and discomfort. But having sex regularly can help prevent symptoms by keeping the vagina moisturized and improving elasticity. If you experience vaginal dryness during intercourse, a good lubricant can make things more comfortable. For women who aren’t sexually active, consider self-stimulation with a vibrator and non-hormonal vaginal moisturizers, like Replens, or vaginal estrogen creams, rings, or pills.

Not Seeing Your Doctor Enough

According to the most recent guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, women 30 and older who have had three consecutive, negative (meaning normal) Pap tests need only get Paps every three years.
But that doesn’t mean you can skip your annual checkup. Your gynecologist still needs to see you once a year — and the clinical breast exam and bimanual pelvic exam she’ll perform can help detect serious health issues like cancer, ovarian cysts, and fibroids. It’s also a great opportunity to get advice on anything from hot flashes to birth control to your sex drive.

9 Secrets Men keep from women...we now know it!!!

9 Secrets Men Keep From Women

You may have married Honest Abe, but many men still keep some of their emotions top secret. A relationship expert explains why they stay so hush-hush........................
Hmmmmmm....... Ever wish you could delve into the male mind to figure out what he’s really thinking? For ages, women have tried to interpret “guy-psyche” — why he didn’t he call; why he did call you by his ex’s name. But every man is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all explanation for guys’ cryptic tendencies. However, research has found a number of surprising parallels. From his fears of commitment to his fondness for cuddling, certain emotions cause many men to freeze up rather than open up. Here are the top secrets guys keep (and why).

1. He Loves You, He Loves You Not ?
Those “three little words” could be the most complex in the English language. While some men prematurely pull the trigger on the "L word" (a recent study from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that guys tend to say “I love you” first, often driven by the idea that their partner will be more likely to have sex with them) — other guys just aren’t that good at getting the words out. Instead, they show their love through their actions. How can you know for sure? Those actions may be a truer indicator of his feelings than any passion-fueled colloquy.

2. He Has Cold Feet
Men often have a harder time picking up on subtle relationship cues — and because of this, your man may not be aware of the point in which your bond has moved to a higher expectation of commitment. In fact, some guys get anxious about becoming attached, even if they seem to enjoy the relationship. "Men often 'rubber band,' withdraw, or pull back if they feel like the relationship has moved beyond their comfort zone," Firstein notes. This new territory can take a man by surprise — even if you felt like he was forging ahead at the same pace you were.

3. He Gets Performance Jitters Do men think about sex a lot?
Sure they do, but their fears of sexual inadequacy may be just as frequent. If a man has ever had an unsuccessful go at sex (and most of them have! — flopped romps can be triggered by common missteps such as drinking too much), his stress in the bedroom can stockpile — which can eventually lead to sexual dysfunction. Many men will even avoid sex rather than talk honestly about their fears with their partner, and this can harm both the sexual health and the emotional health of a relationship.

4. He's Not Crazy About Monogamy
Some men stay mum about the extent of their sexual desires. "Freedom, and particularly sexual freedom, and variety are typically more important to men than to women, “Many married men feel that they love their wives and, at the same time, have no problems cheating." This difference between men and women can be one of the most damaging to a couple because of the sense of betrayal it can create (even if he never actually strays.

5. He Wants You to Initiate Sex (and Cuddling)
You may think sexual desire is hard-wired in men, but with every attempt at turning you on comes a threat of rejection — even in the most established relationships. That’s why it’s such a turn-on when a woman makes the moves, allowing him to skip the risk altogether. And it’s not just sex he wants: One recent study from the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University actually found that cuddling and caressing in a relationship are more important to men than women. Next time, be the sexual pioneer — it could strengthen the health of your relationship more than you realize.

6. He's Depressed
Depression has no gender bias: It can strike anyone, including the most macho of men. However, studies show that men who are depressed are less likely to open up about their sadness or lack of energy than women. Instead, they are more likely to avoid sex, say they’re overtired, or drink more. "Some men are uncomfortable about feeling sad, and their sadness or depression may come out as anger," warns Firstein. Depression is one of the most dangerous secrets a man can keep, so if you think a male in your life could be depressed, it’s important to let him know that you’re concerned.

7. He Suppresses (Instead of Addresses) Doubt
Some men are instilled with the notion that they shouldn’t show signs of fear or doubt; eventually, those doubts and fears can snowball into big secrets, ones they may keep even from themselves. But when his undisclosed apprehensions involve his relationship — whether it’s about getting married or bringing you along to “guys’ night” — both partners’ emotional health is at risk. "Men may postpone a marriage engagement as long as possible and then propose because they think it is the right thing to do,” Firstein says. “They frequently get anxious or distant right before a wedding because they have not fully dealt with their doubts or fears.

8. He Feels Afraid of His Own Feelings
Doubt isn’t the only emotion men stay hush-hush about — in fact, some guys have a hard time opening up about a range of feelings. "Because many men are problem solvers and are uncomfortable talking about feelings, there are a number of intense feelings that don't get expressed with words, but rather acted out, The good news? Men aren’t Neanderthals. The emotions are there; they just need to be uncovered. And if ‘fessing up about his feelings remains a stumbling block, he may need to seek relationship. advice from a professional.

9. And the Biggest Secret Men Keep… Here’s a fact:
Men need (and want) intimacy just as much as women do. Mutual respect, trust, support, and communication — these relationship musts are just as important for a man's emotional and sexual health as they are for a woman's.
When both partners are able to open up and let their relationship develop at its own pace, that love will be nurtured by positivity — rather than stunted by secrets.

The Three Most Common Mistakes of Dry Skin Treatments

Slathering on lotion might not be the best way to soothe dry skin. Here's what you need to know about the best remedies. Itchy, tight, flaky skin that’s about as supple as a month-old rice cake can affect more than your appearance — severely dry skin can also be painful. But even if you have the best treatment intentions, you might inadvertently be sabotaging your complexion. What are the most common mistakes people make when treating dry skin, and what are the smartest solutions? We asked experts to weigh in.
Mistake #1:
Confusing dehydrated skin with dry skin.
“The most common mistake people make is thinking that their skin is dry when it’s really dehydrated. Dry skin is actually very rare. How can you tell the difference? “Dry skin has very tiny pores and is rather tight. Dehydrated skin lacks luster and shine, and can be flaky.”

Smart Solution: Start a smart moisturizing strategy. Apply a rich moisturizer twice a day. In the morning, it’s essential to nourish your skin to replace the water you’ve lost overnight, and in the evening, it locks in moisture after you wash your face — which helps repair your skin while you sleep. Likewise, whether you’re dry or oily, you want to avoid sun damage at all costs, so apply sunscreen daily. You also need to target delicate areas like the eyes and lips that tend to lack moisture and develop fine lines. A gentle yet hydrating eye cream can make lines less prevalent, and lip balm will replace moisture. Look for ingredients such as shea butter and sweet almond oil or even coconut oil

. Mistake #2: Exfoliating aggressively.
Those with dry skin may turn to exfoliation to clear away flakes, but that’s not the best tactic. “A common mistake that people make is to try to scrub off the flakes because their skin looks dull and flaky. This can lead to irritation. Over-scrubbing can actually make skin more inflamed and cause it to produce even more skin to repair itself. Peels and harsh cleansers can have the same results.
Smart Solution: Treat your skin to TLC. Although you might be tempted to wash with a face scrub every time you’re in the shower, using a gentle scrub once a week will do the trick.Everything should be done in moderation, Avoid gel cleansers and foaming products with sulfates; they can contain harsh detergents that strip your skin of much-needed moisture. To begin your day,a little water will get the job done. Your skin usually doesn’t get dirty enough when you sleep to warrant a morning cleansing (assuming that you’ve removed your makeup the night before).

Mistake #3: Using products that are too rich or heavy for your skin.
People who have dehydrated or dry skin often use creams that are extremely rich and heavy. The molecules of these products are rather large, and it’s hard for them to penetrate properly — meaning the product just sits on the skin and can’t really do any good.”
Smart Solution: Look for targeted treatments rather than heavy balms. “A good serum has smaller molecules that allow it to penetrate and add much-needed moisture ahead of your moisturizer, locking it in and creating a good layer of hydration,”says Dermatolist Dr Bolatito Ilesanmi Dr. Ilesanmi says looking for ingredients like licorice and soy extracts; these act as anti-inflammatories and can reduce skin redness and irritation. She also recommends products that contain hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, which increase hydration and reduce itching and tightness.

How Many Eggs Should You Eat Per Week?

We all know that eggs have a lot of cholesterol. And cholesterol can cause heart disease. But eggs are also a good source of protein. They're easy to make and delicious. So how many are too many?

Dieticians have eased up on eggs. They used to tell people with heart disease not to eat more than two per week, but now, up to four are allowed. If you don't have high cholesterol, diabetes, or another heart condition, you can eat up to six. One large egg has about 186 mg of cholesterol. That's almost the total daily maximum for someone with heart disease. So on days you eat an egg or two, try to cut down on other sources of cholesterol like red meat, cheese, and butter. The way you prepare them is also important. Its recommended that drier or oil-free cooking methods -- poaching, boiling, or pan frying with a cooking spray. And remember, all the cholesterol is in the yolk so you can eat as many egg whites as you want!

Sexual foreplay

The Art of Sexual Foreplay

"Quickies" certainly have their time and place, but couples who continuously skip foreplay are passing up a great way to get emotionally and physically warmed up for sex. Physiologically, experts agree that foreplay is an important part of sexual health. In fact, a recent Australian study found that the majority of women are more aroused by the idea of foreplay than sex itself.
Shrugging off foreplay? Here's why — and how — you should start getting friskier, sooner.

How Foreplay Makes Sex Better
"Foreplay is crucial for good sex. It's not just an old wives’ tale that foreplay is something that people should spend more time doing.
"When a woman's body becomes aroused, the muscles actually pull the uterus up a little bit, and it makes more room in the VAGINA. This process, called vaginal tenting, creates more space, which makes sex more comfortable and more pleasurable. "If this doesn't happen, sex can become more uncomfortable.
Doing anything that's sexually exciting or arousing helps a woman to lubricate, which in turn helps a man get and maintain an erection. Its known that when a man is having difficulty achieving orgasm, he may find it easier if he and his partner have engaged in foreplay before sex.
Foreplay can also help a couple feel closer and more intimate, and ultimately both partners feel more aroused and excited. Foreplay is really "about building an emotional connection and getting some excitement going. Kissing is an important part of foreplay to help stimulate all of those physical and emotional responses.
Fantasies or dirty talk can also help get the physical sexual response going. Couples who are aroused by a little dirty talk or have a certainsexual fantasy can incorporate that into foreplay.
Foreplay Suggestions
There is no good or bad method of foreplay, and you don't have to spend hours cuddling, stroking, and kissing before you can move on to sex. A few minutes of foreplay may be all you need. "Foreplay should last at least 10 minutes to give people's bodies enough time to warm up,What's important is to "focus on the stomach and inner thighs and breasts and kissing, but not to dive in too quickly to the genitals," Mrs B

To get your minds and bodies warmed up for sex, try these suggestions for foreplay:
  • Play a game. Have fun with cards, dice, and other sex games that offer tips and rules on what to do to each other.
  • Talk dirty. Say what you're feeling, what you want your partner to do, and what you're thinking.
  • Be together. You can dance together or shower together, but touch, hold, and enjoy.
  • Use oils and flavored products on the skin. Give each other back, foot, or full body massages with an oil or lotion. Pour chocolate, whipped cream, or other tasty delights on your partner's skin, and take your time licking it off.
  • Touch each other. Caress your partner's face, run your fingers through the hair, gently tickle the insides of the arms, the stomach, and the thighs. Rub against each other or lightly tickle — whatever feels good.

Figuring Out Foreplay
You can't know what your partner likes and wants during foreplay if you don't talk about it. "People don't spend enough time just talking to each other when they're not having sex, ask your partner questions about how they want to be touched, stroked, kissed, and caressed, but talk about it outside of the bedroom.
"Getting very specific information about how they want their bodies touched when they're in foreplay is very helpful, but it's easier to have those conversations when you're not about to have sex.
Foreplay can help keep partners connected physically and emotionally, and make for even better sex. Foreplay should help you both be more comfortable and get more pleasure out of sex, so figure out what's the most fun and effective foreplay in your bedroom for you

5 culprits of skin damage

5 Common Culprits that causes Skin Damage

Our skin is assaulted by everything from the sun to irritating laundry detergent and cigarette smokeAnd it can show. Wrinkles, redness, and even skin cancer can result. But before you resign yourself to the aging effects of your environment, consider the five most common culprits of skin damage and learn what you can do to avoid them.
  1. Sun exposure. The sun is the biggest cause of skin damage. The ultraviolet rays of the sun break down collagen and elastin, which help keep your skin looking plump and smooth. They also affect melanocytes, which can lead to changes in your skin’s pigmentation. The aging effects of the sun eventually show on your skin as wrinkles, age spots (patches of brown spots), and possibly skin cancer.

To avoid the skin damage that can be caused by the sun, dermatologists advise staying out of the sun during the middle of the day when the sun’s rays are strongest, using a broad-spectrum sunscreen — one that protects against both types of harmful ultraviolet rays, UVA and UVB — with a sun protection factor of 30 or higher, and wearing protective clothing such as a hat when you’re outside.
  2. Free radicals. One of the ways the sun damages your skin is through production of harmful substances called free radicals. Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules with a single electron. In short, doctors think that ultraviolet light from the sun can lead to damaged DNA and skin damage. Free radicals may even play a role in the development of skin cancer. They are also the result of exposure to tobacco products or other factors in the environment. Some skin care products contain antioxidants such as vitamins C and E that help to lessen the aging effects that free radicals have on your skin. Eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, which contain antioxidants, is also good for healthy skin.
  3. Smoking cigarettes. Overall, the skin of a smoker isn’t as healthy and doesn’t heal as well as a nonsmoker’s skin. It also has a tendency to wrinkle easily. That’s because smoking cigarettes causes all of your blood vessels to constrict, or get more narrow, including the vessels that feed the outer layers of your skin.
When you smoke, your skin gets less of the oxygen and nutrients it needs to stay healthy, and that leads to wrinkles. In addition, smoking causes elastic fibers in the skin to thicken, which means your skin won’t snap back into shape as well and you can experience sagging because ,The more you smoke, the more likely it is to happen, If you smoke two packs a day and you’ve done it for 20 years, you have a 40-pack history. The bigger that number, the more skin damage you’ll see.

Nicotine gum, inhalers, lozenges, nasal spray, and patches can all help you quit, along with prescription medications such as Zyban (bupropion), Chantix (varenicline), Aventyl (nortriptyline), and Catapres (clonidine). Talk to your doctor about the best option for you.
  4. Irritants. Chemicals in cleaning products and laundry detergent can cause red, irritated skin and allergies in people who are susceptible, Samie says. Ammonia and bleaches have a tendency to irritate skin. These chemicals may cause contact dermatitis, which is scaling and irritation, and sometimes even a chemical burn. People with more sensitive skin will experience more skin irritation than others. There are also more than 3,000 substances in our environment that can cause allergies.

The easiest way to protect your skin from irritants is to avoid contact, either by wearing gloves when you clean or do dishes or by switching to less irritating products. Also, moisturizing your skin can help. Some people may need an antihistamine or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for treatment.
  5. Smiles and frowns. It’s a simple fact that as you age your skin loses it elasticity and doesn’t snap back into place after you make facial expressions the way it did when you were younger, Samie says. As a result, your skin will show wrinkles even when you’re not frowning or laughing.
No one would say to stop living life or showing expression on your face, but you can try to combat aging effects by preventing skin damage from the sun with sunscreen. You might also consider using over-the-counter or prescription wrinkle creams or other topical medications to smooth out the skin. Also, a host of procedures are available to reduce wrinkles, including microdermabrasion, chemical peels, laser resurfacing, and injectable fillers such as collagen.
The aging effects of the environment can certainly show up in the mirror, but there’s no reason you can’t fight back with these strategies.
